They crack me up...

Yesterday we went to the mall---#1 Son for a new phone and Twin#1 for ice cream.  So I broke down and bought the "for emergency use only" phone for the twins.  They have been bike riding to friends houses and this way they can take the phone so they are available for real-time nagging from me.

After explaining to Twin#1 the rules and regs for the phone he seems to understand.

Mom:  so it's for calling me or Dad or 911, that's it!
Son#1:  no, I think it's a "calling babes" phone
Mom to Twin#1:  do you have any babes to call?
silence from Twin#1
Mom:  are you not answering because there is a babe
Son#1:  he's not answering because he's changed his name to Nunya
Mom:  Nunya?
Son#1:  Nunya Business
Twin#1:  You can call me Mr. Business

geez, they crack me up...

Here Fishy Fishy.....

This is how the day ended yesterday.....

I'm sitting in bed with some applique watching Idol results (I can't help myself....it's a trainwreck I can't turn away from) and I hear

Twin#2:  Dad.... there's a dead fish floating in the fish tank!
Dad:  Get the net and we'll flush him
Twin #2:  (in the bathroom standing over the tank)  I get to flush! (he's so emotional isn't he?)
Dad:  Go ahead...

the moment of silence for the fallen fish is observed and then screaming and laughing and running footsteps follows.

Twin #2:  (as he's falling over laughing on my bed)  Mom!!! the fish wasn't dead, as soon I flushed he started swimming!!!!

The fish was rescued and returned to the tank

Moral of the story:  Don't take a nap in the fishtank.

Isn't it nice to end the day with the echo of laughter?

In Defense of Dinner

Here's a little window into dinner-time at our house last nite.....

Twin#2:  What are we having for dinner?

Me:  Turkey Tetrazzini

Twin#2:  I'm not eating it!

Me:  why?

Twin#2:  One, because it sounds gross
and B, because it sounds French

How is a Mom to combat such a clear-cut and well thought out argument?

See, this is why I turn to fabric.....think I'll go work on some Civil War blocks

What color is that???

We've been doing a bathroom overhaul for the last 2 months or so....moving walls, tiling, etc.  Now we're up to painting.  For weeks I've been saying "I'm painting it pink"  to which I get groans and "not really" responses....they think I'm kidding.  No pink or any shade has ever made it's way into this house full of men.

So off I go to the local paint store.

"Can I help you?" the lovely paint lady says.
"I need a pink that my husband will not think is pink"
"I understand completely"  she says  and then after a second of thought, she asks "is he a fisherman?"
"Yes....does that help?"
She hands me a  paint chip......"it's salmon"

Paint

GENIUS!

And he bought it....hook, line and sinker!

I love smart people who help me in my evil plans....

Not Exactly what I meant.....

We seem to have a communication problem here in the Johnson family unit....

When I said I thought we should put an addition on our cabin in the woods, this is not exactly what I meant:
Snowfort
and when I said we should have a nice Sunday dinner, this is not exactly what I meant:
Sundaes
So I guess there's some important lessons to be learned during this family time together:

1-- say what you mean and mean what you say
2-- a dash of the unexpected keeps everyone on their toes
3-- nutrition can take a short break too.

I guess a little reminder to make fun part of our daily lives is a good thing...especially in this time of resolutions.

I hope the New Year brings you quiet moments of peace, loud moments of fun and more moments than you can count of love from those you hold dear.

Ain't Technology Grand??

I don't usually react well to gifts prefaced by "don't be offended" but YAHOO, this was a good one!
Vacuum_2

I have a strict "No Cleaning Products" rule when it come to the DH and kids, but this came from my parents so they get special dispensation.  They were saying something about more quality time with the kids, but I wasn't really listening, I needed to QUICK, get it plugged in and get this baby started.

So today, while we relaxed, the newest member of the household went to work, evoking some odd reactions....Twin#2:  "Mom, it's following me", DH:  "is it actually doing anything?" and Kitty#2: Hisssssss.

But no matter what they say, I gladly welcome this little robot to our house and thank God for technological advancements.

Hope you got some gadgets too...

Carols

Last nite was Decorate the Tree....otherwise known as the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Ornaments Nite.  Popstick

We bring out all those spray painted gold macaroni ornaments, the portrait of our family made out of craft foam and other assorted school projects.....

and sometimes I look at some of these with new inspiration....let's see if I can translate this into a quilt....
Redornament

And while we all decorated and listened to Christmas carols, I heard a line from Do You Hear What I Hear...."He will bring us Goodness and Light" and looked at my three miracles hanging ornaments on the tree and thought....
                                   ....He already has.

Hope you see your miracles in the season's light.

What are they teaching in school?

I took the kids out for White Hot Chocolate at "the D's" (as they call Dunkin Donuts).  On the way home, all sugared up, they started to call each other names.  Trying to stay true to my "call me if there's blood" mantra, I remained silent.  This goes on for a bit and continues to get louder til Twin # 2 finally says "I'm a strong person, you can't hurt me emotionally", to which Twin # 1 responds "then how about this?" and slugs him in the arm.

Well, I guess the touchy-feeling teaching only goes so far.....a case of nature vs nurture?

Anywho....the Amazing Jeanne from Cover Me Quilts finished my tumbler quilt and it is gorgeous!  She did an allover in variegated beige thread.

Don't you just love the feel of a freshly quilted quilt?

Creatures Great and Small

There are days when I feel like there are people put on this planet to torment me, most of them are related  to me in some way---like I gave birth to them.  And in a house full of men, socks have been the Torment Du Jour.  Every time I turn around, there are socks on the kitchen floor.  For weeks I have complained about having to clean up socks----why can't they just throw in the laundry basket?????  Are they doing this on purpose?  do they think I'm the maid??

The answer was revealed in a quiet moment when everyone else in the house was fast asleep.  My little tormentor has 4 legs....
Shadow

Oh sure, she's cute, but don't be fooled.  She appears to have taken the role of the sock monster in this little drama.  For there she was, at the top of the basement stairs leading into the kitchen, with a sock in her mouth.....and I swear I saw a grin! For weeks, she has been carrying socks from the laundry room in the basement and leaving them on the kitchen floor!

So now the laundry basket comes right up to the bedroom and clothes put away and the flow of socks has been halted.

Was she trying to teach me something, or has the list of creatures put on this planet to torment me just be increased to include the 4 legged variety?

Hope your day is torment-free....

Quilts and Kids

There are moments with my kids that are sheer joy and they are completely unaware....

Last weekend, we started our Saturday with the soccer game.  What's better than a bright fall morning at the soccer field with kids running around (instead of me) ?

Soccer

Twin #2 had played goalie for the first quarter and thank God, no goals were scored on him.  As they are getting their water bottles, #1 says to #2 "you know, you're really good at goalie!"   OMG, I'm raising kind, considerate people!  Sheer Joy for Mom!  Of course 2 minutes later their kicking each other instead of the ball....but a moment of joy leaves a lasting effect.

It was Quilt Show weekend as well,  so let me show you two of my fav's---thanks to Carol and MaryEllen, the makers of these quilts...

Carolbenners

Maryellen

I guess my infatuation with red is not dying down....

There were so many wonderful quilts(too many to post here), and energetic people running the show, I went home thinking...what am I going to do for the next show?  Quilt shows are always give me a new burst of energy...how about you?
