My Mom is A Dork

It would be best for all involved if they would just memorize this phrase.

With 2 people starting 5th grade today, I thought this would be a nice way to greet the day

Happy5th_3
I got:

DH:  uh honey, I think it's the 4th

Twin#2:  what???

Twin#1:  you forgot the zero
(dad's 50th birthday bash is 2 days away)

DS#1: oh God

If they would just play along and say "that's great Mom/Honey" life would be calmer, now they will be made to suffer, now that I have time alone to plot my revenge for their lack of appreciation.

Oh no, I think my evil twin was showing.....

Lumberyard Humor

There are many wonderful things about our house in the woods.....

--dinner can be eaten on the coffee table if the game of Monopoly is still in progress at dinnertime

--the door is never locked, and most often, not closed, cause apparently we DO live in a barn

-- Grandma and Grandpop live next door

and in our little town, there is no supermarket, there is no liquor store, there is no restaurant. There is a post office and the lumberyard.  So if one wants to visit with the neighbors, one goes to one of these two places.

So my DH went to the lumberyard the other day and the store manager asked about my FIL since they had not seen him in a while.  My DH said he was fine and went about his $2.20 purchases (probably $5 in gas to get there, but it was really more of a social call).

The next day he takes his father with him to the lumberyard for some forgotten item.  The store manager takes one look at my FIL and says to my husband " I just asked how he was, I didn't say you had to bring him in"

Don't you just have to giggle at the way men talk when women aren't around?

P.S.  We are finally home after nearly 2 weeks away, so if I have not responded to your comments, please forgive me!  I have some catching up (and laundry) to do!

Nice to know

My left coast brother reports from a Portland brew fest last weekend that a new brew is one that reminded him of me....isn't it nice when your family thinks of you???  And I don't really even drink that much!  (attention Sister Mary Awful:  comments from you on this subject will be blocked!)

Created by the brewery's founder,
Quilter's Irish Death is an
Imperial Sweet Stout with
a big malt body and
balanced bitterness.
Over half a dozen malts
combine to make
this one dark, smooth, and
hi-octane ale...the name
is a necessary reminder
that despite the surprising
approachability,
this beer weighs in at a
hefty 7.8% ABV.

Meanwhile back at the farm.....

I told you last week that these little dresdens were haunting me.....now they are multiplying.

Dresdens

I can't wait to see what happens next!

btw, I got a few questions on the templates I used.  It's a set by Marti Michell that makes 3 and 6" pointed and rounded dresden plate blocks.  It's hard to get the angles just right for this block, so the acrylic templates makes for a much better finished block because the angle of the pieces are more precise and the pieces come out the same every time (unless I'm chatting and not paying attention to my cutting).

I'm sure there are other ways to get a really good cut, but for me these acrylic templates are the quickest, most consistent way to get those quilts done that require not-your-normal-geometry type shapes.  I do find that using a smaller rotary cutter works better on some of these smaller shapes---it's easier to see what I'm doing.

They crack me up...

Yesterday we went to the mall---#1 Son for a new phone and Twin#1 for ice cream.  So I broke down and bought the "for emergency use only" phone for the twins.  They have been bike riding to friends houses and this way they can take the phone so they are available for real-time nagging from me.

After explaining to Twin#1 the rules and regs for the phone he seems to understand.

Mom:  so it's for calling me or Dad or 911, that's it!
Son#1:  no, I think it's a "calling babes" phone
Mom to Twin#1:  do you have any babes to call?
silence from Twin#1
Mom:  are you not answering because there is a babe
Son#1:  he's not answering because he's changed his name to Nunya
Mom:  Nunya?
Son#1:  Nunya Business
Twin#1:  You can call me Mr. Business

geez, they crack me up...

Here Fishy Fishy.....

This is how the day ended yesterday.....

I'm sitting in bed with some applique watching Idol results (I can't help myself....it's a trainwreck I can't turn away from) and I hear

Twin#2:  Dad.... there's a dead fish floating in the fish tank!
Dad:  Get the net and we'll flush him
Twin #2:  (in the bathroom standing over the tank)  I get to flush! (he's so emotional isn't he?)
Dad:  Go ahead...

the moment of silence for the fallen fish is observed and then screaming and laughing and running footsteps follows.

Twin #2:  (as he's falling over laughing on my bed)  Mom!!! the fish wasn't dead, as soon I flushed he started swimming!!!!

The fish was rescued and returned to the tank

Moral of the story:  Don't take a nap in the fishtank.

Isn't it nice to end the day with the echo of laughter?

In Defense of Dinner

Here's a little window into dinner-time at our house last nite.....

Twin#2:  What are we having for dinner?

Me:  Turkey Tetrazzini

Twin#2:  I'm not eating it!

Me:  why?

Twin#2:  One, because it sounds gross
and B, because it sounds French

How is a Mom to combat such a clear-cut and well thought out argument?

See, this is why I turn to fabric.....think I'll go work on some Civil War blocks

What color is that???

We've been doing a bathroom overhaul for the last 2 months or so....moving walls, tiling, etc.  Now we're up to painting.  For weeks I've been saying "I'm painting it pink"  to which I get groans and "not really" responses....they think I'm kidding.  No pink or any shade has ever made it's way into this house full of men.

So off I go to the local paint store.

"Can I help you?" the lovely paint lady says.
"I need a pink that my husband will not think is pink"
"I understand completely"  she says  and then after a second of thought, she asks "is he a fisherman?"
"Yes....does that help?"
She hands me a  paint chip......"it's salmon"

Paint

GENIUS!

And he bought it....hook, line and sinker!

I love smart people who help me in my evil plans....

Not Exactly what I meant.....

We seem to have a communication problem here in the Johnson family unit....

When I said I thought we should put an addition on our cabin in the woods, this is not exactly what I meant:
Snowfort
and when I said we should have a nice Sunday dinner, this is not exactly what I meant:
Sundaes
So I guess there's some important lessons to be learned during this family time together:

1-- say what you mean and mean what you say
2-- a dash of the unexpected keeps everyone on their toes
3-- nutrition can take a short break too.

I guess a little reminder to make fun part of our daily lives is a good thing...especially in this time of resolutions.

I hope the New Year brings you quiet moments of peace, loud moments of fun and more moments than you can count of love from those you hold dear.

Ain't Technology Grand??

I don't usually react well to gifts prefaced by "don't be offended" but YAHOO, this was a good one!
Vacuum_2

I have a strict "No Cleaning Products" rule when it come to the DH and kids, but this came from my parents so they get special dispensation.  They were saying something about more quality time with the kids, but I wasn't really listening, I needed to QUICK, get it plugged in and get this baby started.

So today, while we relaxed, the newest member of the household went to work, evoking some odd reactions....Twin#2:  "Mom, it's following me", DH:  "is it actually doing anything?" and Kitty#2: Hisssssss.

But no matter what they say, I gladly welcome this little robot to our house and thank God for technological advancements.

Hope you got some gadgets too...

Carols

Last nite was Decorate the Tree....otherwise known as the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Ornaments Nite.  Popstick

We bring out all those spray painted gold macaroni ornaments, the portrait of our family made out of craft foam and other assorted school projects.....

and sometimes I look at some of these with new inspiration....let's see if I can translate this into a quilt....
Redornament

And while we all decorated and listened to Christmas carols, I heard a line from Do You Hear What I Hear...."He will bring us Goodness and Light" and looked at my three miracles hanging ornaments on the tree and thought....
                                   ....He already has.

Hope you see your miracles in the season's light.
